The need for multiple weight classes

Many fighters at the highest level of MMA compete at multiple weight classes, proving that it is possible to do so and have sustained success. With this in mind, UFC flyweight title contender, hazmat chimaev wants to prove he can be one of these elite fighters by fighting in more than one weight class. 

I am not a big fighter, said chimaev. This is why I will fight in different weight classes for sure. For now, I am only fighting at 125 pounds, but we are looking ahead. 

The Russian bantamweight will be entering his third UFC flyweight bout on Saturday night as he takes on number ten ranked Tim Elliott.


Challenges of moving up in weight classes

Khamzat Chimaev wanted a challenge, so he decided to move up two weight classes. Khamzat is currently ranked number six in his weight class of 155 pounds but wants to rank number one by his birthday on January 20th.


Strategies For Moving Up In Weight Classes

Khamzat Chimaev has been an IFBB professional bodybuilder for over a decade and a powerlifter for about ten years. Besides winning four consecutive Mr. Olympia titles, he was also the World’s Strongest Man in 2004 and 2005. 

And this isn’t where he’s topped out – he currently holds the world record deadlift at 1,200kg (about 2,646 pounds) with only straps and suit bottoms (for contest briefs).

 With everything going on in his life, it can be difficult for him to keep track of his weight class. So we talked with him about what strategies he uses to move up in weight classes as needed. Here are four of them


What Makes a Fighter Great?

Few fighters make a significant impact on the sport. One of those is Russian superstar, Khamzat Chimaev. At 34-1-0 with all but two of his wins coming by way of KO, his current resume speaks for itself. 

In recent years, he’s beaten a slew of top 10 fighters and won four world titles across three weight classes—feats that only a handful have been able to accomplish.
